The prices that you get for futures trades are based strictly on the supply and demand of that specific futures stock. Unlike other stocks the price is not set by the different commodity exchanges.
The number of orders that are available on the market floor that day is really the driving factor behind the price for futures. While there is some risk associated with futures you also can make a huge profit and are protected against some types of risk. Any risk that is due to market fluctuations is eliminated when trading in futures.
The underlying principle is that a futures contract is traded on a future change at a future date but the price set for that supposed change is early so there is the risk that the change may not happen. Most of these changes are based on assumptions that are going to happen and there are two different results that can come out of futures trading.
Investing based on an assumption can be very profitable if you know how to read the market and understand the different trends.
You can also use hedging which can protect against market fluctuations as this allows for risk. An example of this is a manufacturer that hedges incase the price of the raw materials increases and he can do this through the futures market.
You can have both a hedge sale and a hedge purchase. Futures may seem a bit confusing at first but with a bit of time and education you will be on your way to understanding futures thoroughly.
