Which hammer should I buy 24oz or 28oz?

Thursday Aug 27, 2009

I have been working as a carpenter and I have owned a 20 oz Stanly hammer but right now I am looking for a 24~28oz for doing framing work and sinking 3&half inch nails and denailng.

I’ve borrowed 24oz Stanly hammer anti vibe from my co workers but I felt I could go a little heavier.

I mean I don’t use hammer all day for we have nail guns and only swing hammer probably less than 100 depends on what we’re doing.
I do both framing and finishing work, so I can use the old 20oz for finishing work and 22oz isn’t much different from 20 so isn’t an option.

I’ve heard a lot of people saying Estwing is better than Stanly but I think I’m going with Anti vibe Stanly with nail starter.

Let me know you’re opinion especially people from this trade.
Thank you

I’m a carpenter and I use a Estwing 20 and I also do both framing and finishing work, as you said (I don’t use hammer all day for we have nail guns and only swing hammer probably less than 100 depends on what we’re doing) to me 28oz seem a bit heavy but I’m not a big man,

Personally I wouldn’t buy another hammer unless I wasn’t using a nail gun even though the 20oz is light on for framing, I can see the need for a heavier hammer from time to time, but also see the need for a specific tool in many other instances, but because there’s only so many tools a person can haul around where do you stop? If I were going to buy another hammer for me it would be a 24oz.

The Ideology of the Republican Party?

Thursday Aug 27, 2009

Obama won, and a lot of conservatives I know seem surprised. It’s been a well known fact, as far as I was concerned, since 2005 that the GOP had no chance in this election, and therein lies my question:

America has always been somewhat right of center in regards to politics, and it seems like independent, moderate voters only really swing left when the GOP loses sight of what really matters to the core of America (or in the past 30 years I guess it could be argued that it happens when they forget to lie as though they do know what matters to the core of America). Maybe it’s me, and I’m not moderate – maybe I am liberal, and that’s what you could set straight for me but my questions are as follows: Will the republican party retool and recognize that moderate voters do not want legislation that’s founded in religion (let Gays have marriage rights, legalize abortion, fund stem cell research, etc), will they realize that we want small business America back in action which means strong regulation of the MegaCorps (which are currently starving our economy and forcing us to be more dependent on foreign trade then we are comfortable with) must be enacted and enforced, will they realize that we want government small in regards to their oversight of our lives yet big enough to be able to guarantee a certain quality of life for all its citizens, and will it realize that we want our government to be completely transparent and immediately accountable to the citizenry? If so how and when?

I ask this because I just voted for Obama, and I’m pleased with the option, but I agree with democrats about as much as I do with republicans as a rule. What are they (GOP) going to do to become a realistic option again, and will they apologize for going crazy?

I can’t speak for the Republican Party; I am a registered Republican but I have no idea what direction we would go in. But if we did some of the things you suggest we would cease to be who we are; from the G.O.P.’s formation back in 1854 we were a party based on values; the first of which was opposing slavery. Today our values are things like opposing gay marriage 9even though I myself support gay rights), opposing abortion, and being against stem cell research. Plus most of the Republicans do not favor high regulations of corporations; but as President Bush said the recent collapse of mortgage companies was a very special exception. As far as your notion of "guaranteeing a certain quality of life for all its citizens", its a basic Republican belief that its each individual citizens and/or family’s responsibility to ensure this; and most Republicans favor as little government involvement in both the free enterprise market and in line of thinking. So in other words; if they did all of this they would cease to be who they are; it seems like you are trying to turn them in to the Democratic Party.

I think that what they need to do now is watch how the Dems mess up for the next few years, such as if the economy suffers after taxes raised or if overtaxed companies are forced to lay people off; and exploit it both in the 2010 mid term elections and in the 2012 Presidential election. You see the thing is we were planning on countering Hillary for so long and weren’t prepared for Obama to come out of no where. And if there’s any kind of attack or "test" during an Obama administration (which of course I hope to God there is not); Obama’s lack of foreign policy knowledge can be exploited as well. We need a candidate that has both popularity and has an appeal to the center. Both Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal has been mentioned. Several others who ran this year are still around. Personally, I’m hoping Newt Gengrich runs.

It does seem you at least have an understanding of why you like Obama; unlike some other sheep.

updated 6:34 p.m. CT, Fri., Feb. 8, 2008
WASHINGTON – The influenza vaccine given to Americans may not protect as well as expected, U.S. health officials said on Friday as the number of flu cases increased nationwide.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said slightly more than half of the influenza virus strains reported to its surveillance system are not good matches against the strains included in this flu season’s vaccine.

The number of states reporting widespread flu activity jumped to 31 this week compared with 11 a week ago, the CDC said. But Dr. Joe Bresee of the CDC’s influenza division said there are no indications this flu season is worse than usual.

“Seasonal flu activity was slow to start this year but has increased sharply in recent weeks,” Bresee told reporters.

One measure officials use to gauge the severity of the season is the number of flu-related child deaths. Bresee said the CDC has heard of six U.S. children who have died from the flu, a relatively low number compared with recent years.

Flu viruses mutate and change all the time, so every year a different vaccine is created as officials predict which particular strains will circulate.

The vaccine is designed to protect against three influenza strains — two from Type A, an H1N1 and an H3N2 version, and one for Type B.

Bresee said about 30 percent of the overall strains of influenza in the United States may be a Type A strain that emerged in Australia called H3N2 A/Brisbane. It emerged too late to be included in the flu vaccine offered in the United States beginning in September and October.

The Type B strain chosen for this year’s vaccine also was not a good match for most of the B virus strains seen in the United States this flu season, Bresee said.

“While a less-than-ideal virus match between the viruses in the vaccine and those circulating viruses can reduce vaccine effectiveness, we know from past influenza studies that the vaccine can still protect enough to make illness milder or prevent flu-related complications,” Bresee said.

Bresee noted that decisions on the composition of the annual vaccine are made about nine months before it is made available to the public in the fall, and it is sometimes hard to know that far in advance which strains will circulate.

Flu vaccines take months to make.

Bresee also said some resistance is being reported to the antiviral drug Tamiflu, made by Switzerland’s Roche Holding AG and Gilead Sciences Inc of the United States. Of the viruses tested in CDC flu labs, 4.5 percent are resistant to the drug, Bresee said.

Influenza kills an estimated 36,000 Americans in an average year, and puts 200,000 into the hospital, the CDC said.
